Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has celebrated the outstanding achievement of Rukayat Suleimon after she clinched a gold medal at the World Sambo Cup held in Yerevan, Armenia.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, the governor described Suleimon’s feat as historic and inspirational.
Suleimon, a Lagos State judo champion, became the first female blind sambist in the world to win gold at an international sambo competition organised by the International Sambo Federation (FIAS). She achieved the milestone after defeating opponents from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan in the women’s 54kg category.
Governor Sanwo-Olu praised her determination and resilience, noting that her success highlights Nigerian excellence on the global stage. He added that winning gold in an international debut reflects her preparation, discipline, and commitment to the sport.
He also described her as a role model for young girls across Nigeria, encouraging them to pursue their dreams despite challenges.
The governor said the victory is a source of pride for Lagos, Nigeria, and Africa, and reaffirmed the state’s support for athletes representing the country at international competitions.
