The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has secured the conviction of two individuals arrested for illegal waste dumping during an overnight sanitation surveillance operation in the Igando-Ikotun area of Lagos State.

The offenders, identified as Kingsley Adieme and Rachel Onyekachi, were apprehended during an operation carried out by LAWMA’s Operation W.I.S.E Enforcement Team in collaboration with the Igando-Ikotun Local Council Development Area (LCDA) Environmental Monitoring Unit.

They were arraigned before the Magistrate Court sitting in Bolade, Oshodi, where they pleaded guilty to indiscriminate waste disposal and were sentenced to three months imprisonment.

Reacting to the development, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, described the conviction as a demonstration of the Lagos State Government’s commitment to enforcing environmental laws and ensuring compliance.

He reiterated that the state maintains zero tolerance for environmental violations, warning residents against patronising illegal waste handlers.

Gbadegesin urged residents to make use of approved Private Sector Participant (PSP) operators and support ongoing enforcement efforts aimed at improving waste management across the state.

He also encouraged the public to report environmental infractions through LAWMA’s official channels, including its WhatsApp line and social media platforms for prompt response.

LAWMA added that enforcement operations will continue across the state as part of efforts to promote a cleaner and more sustainable environment.
