The Lagos State Government has hosted the inaugural meeting of Commissioners for Physical Planning and Urban Development from the South-West region to strengthen regional integration and promote coordinated development across the six states.

The meeting, held at Protea Select Hotel, Alausa, Ikeja, was hosted by the Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Oluyinka Olumide.

The event brought together Commissioners from Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ekiti and Ondo States, alongside representatives of the DAWN Commission and the South-West Development Commission, as well as urban planners and other stakeholders.

Speaking at the meeting, Olumide said the initiative was aimed at deepening interstate collaboration as a pathway to sustainable development, noting that the South-West region faces challenges such as rapid urban growth, infrastructure deficits, and housing shortages.

He stressed that coordinated planning is necessary to manage Lagos’ expanding population and ensure long-term regional sustainability.

Themed “Forging Regional Integration Through Coordinated Physical Planning, Urban Development, and Sustainable Land Governance,” the meeting focused on building a framework for harmonised development across the region.

Olumide added that the gathering was a follow-up to the Lagos Physical Planning Summit 2024, which called for a new vision of a regional and integrated megacity.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Office of Physical Planning, Oluwole Sotire, announced plans for the 2.0 edition of the Lagos Physical Planning Summit scheduled for June, and invited South-West stakeholders to participate.

At the end of the meeting, participants agreed on key resolutions, including the adoption of regional integration as a central development strategy, the strengthening of institutional frameworks for coordinated planning, and the development of a comprehensive Western Region Master Plan.

They also resolved to establish a coordinated regional mechanism to harmonise policies and infrastructure projects, with emphasis on transport corridors, coastal roads, and inter-state connectivity to drive economic growth.
