The Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Health District V, Oladapo Asiyanbi, has called on residents, government institutions, the private sector, and communities to embrace collective responsibility in safeguarding public health through preventive care and science-based practices.

He made the call during the World Health Day Walk and Medical Outreach held at 2nd Avenue, Festac Town, Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area, in commemoration of World Health Day.

Asiyanbi stressed that health is a shared responsibility, noting that improved outcomes require active participation from all stakeholders, including residents in urban, riverine, and border communities.

He also emphasised the importance of science-based healthcare, debunking misconceptions about malaria diagnosis and warning against self-medication without proper testing.

According to him, many individuals who assume they have malaria are often wrongly self-diagnosing, adding that proper medical testing is essential before treatment.

The Permanent Secretary highlighted preventive healthcare priorities under the Lagos State THEMES Plus Agenda, including routine check-ups, balanced nutrition, physical activity, adequate rest, and regular screening for conditions such as hypertension and diabetes.

He further urged residents to enrol in the state health insurance scheme to ensure access to affordable healthcare, while encouraging maternal health services, child immunisation, and regular screenings for men aged 40 and above.

The event featured a health walk, aerobic exercises, health talks, and free medical screenings including blood pressure, blood sugar, malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV tests, with referrals made where necessary.

Outstanding community volunteers and health champions were also recognised, while 13 participants emerged winners in the 2026 World Health Day Challenge.
