The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has commenced a pre-festive cleaning operation in Ikoyi, targeting drainage channels and other strategic areas ahead of increased activities during the festive season.
The exercise began with the cleaning of drainage channels along the Bourdillon, Alexander and Gerrard corridors, where accumulated silt, waste and other obstructions are being removed to improve water flow and environmental conditions.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said materials evacuated from the drainage channels were being removed immediately to prevent wash-back and the creation of fresh environmental problems.
Gbadegesin said the operation would continue across other streets in Ikoyi before extending to Victoria Island and other parts of Lagos as part of the authority’s wider pre-festive sanitation programme.
He urged residents and businesses to keep drainage channels free of waste, properly package refuse and hand it over to accredited Private Sector Participation operators for appropriate disposal.
The LAWMA boss also appealed to residents and businesses to provide unhindered access to areas requiring cleaning and avoid activities that could obstruct sanitation operations.
