LASG to Prioritise Nurses’ Training, Welfare
The Lagos State Government says it will prioritise continuous professional training and improved welfare for nurses as part of efforts to strengthen primary healthcare delivery across the state.
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board, Dr Ibrahim Akinwunmi Mustafa, disclosed this at the 2026 Annual Nurses’ Assembly held at NANNM House, Alausa, Ikeja, with the theme, “Our Nurses. Our Future: Empowered Nurses Save Lives.”
Mustafa said modern nursing requires continuous skills development, noting that the government would roll out additional training programmes and welfare packages to address operational challenges facing nursing staff.
He also urged nurses to uphold professional ethics, empathy and integrity, while maintaining transparency and avoiding corrupt practices in public healthcare facilities.
The Director of Nursing Services at the LSPHCB, Anne Olusumbo Oyesanya, said nurses remain a critical link between the health system and communities, particularly at the primary healthcare level.
Oyesanya said the Directorate would expand continuous professional development, mentorship networks and recognition for clinical excellence, while encouraging nurses to embrace technology, innovation, leadership and patient-centred care.
The event also featured discussions on modern nursing practice, technology and innovation, as well as a session on mental well-being and stress management for healthcare workers.
