The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has warned children, teenagers and young adults against using rolling skate shoes, wheeled footwear and similar recreational devices on public highways and other vehicular corridors.
The Authority said the practice exposes users to avoidable traffic hazards, particularly when they glide alongside moving vehicles, cross carriageways or manoeuvre through traffic without adequate protection and adult supervision.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said public roads are dynamic environments where vehicles, motorcycles and pedestrians operate simultaneously, making them unsuitable for recreational activities involving wheeled devices.
He urged parents, guardians, schools and caregivers to discourage children from using rolling skate shoes on highways, expressways, bridges, service lanes and other areas with vehicular traffic.
The Authority advised users to restrict skating activities to designated recreational areas or other safe environments and to use protective equipment such as helmets, knee pads and elbow pads.
LASTMA also urged motorists to exercise greater caution around children and young people using wheeled footwear, particularly in residential areas, estates and school zones.
The Authority called on members of the public to report dangerous traffic situations, crashes, road obstructions and breakdowns through its toll-free short code 3367 for prompt intervention.
