Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has approved a 60 per cent increase in the monthly subvention to all state owned tertiary institutions and directed affected institutions to implement the 2025 Federal Government agreement with university unions.

The measures take effect this month, according to a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan.

The state government said the increased funding is expected to help tertiary institutions meet their financial obligations, particularly salary payments, while improving staff welfare and learning conditions.

Governor Aiyedatiwa directed the management of the institutions to use the additional funds responsibly, with priority given to staff welfare and the maintenance of academic standards.

He also called on unions to reciprocate by maintaining industrial harmony and focusing on teaching and learning.

The governor said his administration remained committed to making Ondo State a hub for quality tertiary education and would continue to take steps to strengthen state owned institutions.

The implementation of the Federal Government’s 2025 agreement with university unions is also expected to introduce improved conditions of service for eligible staff in affected state institutions.

The agreement, reached between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, includes a 40 per cent upward review of academic staff emoluments and other changes to conditions of service.

The state government, however, did not disclose the financial value of the 60 per cent increase or the new monthly allocations for individual institutions.

The actual impact of the policy will therefore depend on the funds released to the institutions and how the additional resources are utilised.

The government expects the increased funding to support regular salary payments, improve working conditions and reduce disruptions to academic activities.

Students could also benefit indirectly from greater academic stability and improved institutional operations.

The affected institutions are expected to begin implementing the measures in August, with the government expected to provide further details on the financial implications and implementation of the FG ASUU agreement.
