Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Union Bank of Nigeria, Yetunde B. Oni, has urged professionals to embrace opportunities even when they feel uncertain, stressing that confidence is often built through experience rather than before it.
In an opinion article titled The Future Belongs to Those Who Show Up, Oni said many talented people miss opportunities because they wait until they feel completely prepared, noting that growth comes from stepping forward and embracing challenges.
According to her, individuals should not disqualify themselves from opportunities out of self doubt, as every application, interview, or leadership experience helps build competence and confidence.
She said leadership is defined not only by technical ability but by integrity, humility, and a willingness to continue learning.
Oni also emphasised the role of leaders in shaping workplace culture, saying employees perform at their best when they feel psychologically safe to contribute ideas, ask questions, and learn from mistakes without fear.
She encouraged organisations to foster open communication and honest feedback, describing constructive criticism as an essential tool for personal and professional development rather than punishment.
Speaking on leadership qualities, the Union Bank chief said ethics and integrity remain the foundation of trust, adding that while skills can be developed, character determines how those skills are applied.
Oni noted that her definition of success has evolved beyond career achievements to include family wellbeing, meaningful relationships, and making a positive impact on society. She also stressed the importance of rest, healthy boundaries, and seeking support as part of sustainable leadership.
She further called for greater inclusion of women in leadership, urging organisations to create environments where women are encouraged to speak up, contribute ideas, and pursue leadership opportunities.
According to her, leaders have a responsibility to identify talent, create platforms for growth, and support others through mentorship and constructive feedback.
Oni said her vision for Union Bank is to strengthen a workplace culture built on trust, accountability, empowerment, and excellence, where employees are motivated to thrive and contribute meaningfully.
She concluded that the future belongs to those who prepare, act with integrity, support others, and have the courage to seize opportunities before they feel completely ready.
