The unveiling of Against All Odds, a photographic chronicle of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration, became a celebration of Lagos’ resilience, history and transformation as political leaders, traditional rulers and business executives gathered at Eko Hotels and Suites in Victoria Island.
The book, authored by the Governor’s official photographer, Ademola Olaniran, documents some of the most defining moments of Lagos in recent years, capturing both the challenges and achievements that have shaped the state during Sanwo-Olu’s tenure.
The event attracted prominent dignitaries, including representatives of the National Assembly, state governors, traditional rulers, diplomats and captains of industry, reflecting Lagos’ strategic role in Nigeria’s political and economic landscape.
Speaking at the unveiling, Governor Sanwo-Olu said the publication was not merely a record of his administration but a tribute to the people of Lagos whose resilience has sustained the state through periods of uncertainty and transformation.
According to him, the true story behind the book lies in the experiences of ordinary residents, from healthcare workers and traders to engineers, students and young people whose lives intersect with the state’s development journey.
The publication revisits major events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the EndSARS protests, the Abule-Ado explosion and other incidents that tested the resolve of government and citizens. It also highlights landmark projects including the Lagos Blue and Red Rail Lines, the Lekki Deep Sea Port, housing developments and investments in healthcare, education and food security.
Representing Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin described the book as a visual record of governance during challenging times and a testament to the determination of Lagos and its people.
He noted that beyond showcasing infrastructure and development projects, the photographs preserve stories of courage, sacrifice and hope that define the Lagos experience.
Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, also underscored the importance of photography in preserving history, noting that images often tell stories that words alone cannot fully capture.
Guests at the event viewed photographs depicting frontline healthcare workers during the pandemic, scenes from the EndSARS protests, major infrastructure projects and communities recovering from tragic incidents.
One of the most notable images featured four Lagos governors holding a model train, symbolising continuity in governance and the long-term vision that has driven the state’s development across successive administrations.
Governor Sanwo-Olu paid tribute to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former Governors Babatunde Fashola and Akinwunmi Ambode, acknowledging their contributions to the growth of modern Lagos and stressing the importance of building on existing foundations rather than abandoning previous achievements.
For Olaniran, the publication represents an effort to preserve a shared history and document the story of a city that continues to evolve while remaining rooted in its heritage.
The presence of Lagos monarchs and white-cap chiefs added cultural significance to the occasion, reinforcing the connection between tradition and modern governance.
