The Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy has trained youths in Lagos under its Youth Leadership, Emergency Action and Development (YOU-LEAD) initiative, aimed at equipping participants with leadership and emergency response skills to support community development.
Speaking at the programme organised in collaboration with the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area, the Executive Secretary of the academy, Mrs. Ayisat Agbaje-Okunade, said the initiative is designed to inspire young people to become solution-driven leaders capable of addressing challenges in their communities.
She explained that the programme is part of broader efforts to expand access to leadership development opportunities, noting that thousands of youths apply annually for similar initiatives under the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Agbaje-Okunade added that the YOU-LEAD initiative, alongside platforms such as the Lagos Leadership Summit, provides avenues for participants to build networks, showcase their skills, and access opportunities that can improve their career prospects. She also noted that some beneficiaries have already secured jobs and business opportunities through these engagements.
In his remarks, the Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area, Hon. Sesan Olowa, said the council remains committed to preparing young people for the economic opportunities emerging within the rapidly developing Ibeju-Lekki axis.
He emphasized the importance of partnerships in organising leadership and skills development programmes, adding that such initiatives will help youths become competitive in the labour market as industrial activities continue to grow in the area.
Participants at the training were exposed to practical sessions on leadership, teamwork, and emergency response, including Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and other life-saving techniques. The organisers stressed that leadership goes beyond holding positions of authority, but also involves taking responsibility and driving positive change within communities.
