The Lagos State Health District IV has honoured Mrs. Betty Allen Albert-Obateye, former Director of Environmental Health, at a send-off ceremony marking her retirement from the Lagos State Public Service after 35 years of distinguished service.
The event, held at the Lagos Island East LCDA Hall, ZAPPASS, Lagos, brought together colleagues, family members, friends and well-wishers to celebrate her contributions to environmental health and public service.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Health District IV, Dr. Abimbola Bowale, described Mrs. Albert-Obateye as a dedicated officer and environmental advocate who played a significant role in promoting environmental cleanliness across the health district.
Represented by the Director of Environmental Services, Mr. Adekoya David, Dr. Bowale prayed for her continued good health and fulfilment in retirement. He also encouraged her to maintain a healthy lifestyle and remain actively involved in community service.
The ceremony featured goodwill messages from professional colleagues, family members and friends who commended her commitment, professionalism and impact on the environmental health sector.
Responding, Mrs. Albert-Obateye expressed appreciation to all guests who attended her pens-down and pull-out parade. She urged Environmental Health Officers to remain steadfast, honest and dedicated to their duties, stressing that public service is primarily about serving the people rather than pursuing personal interests.
She also encouraged officers to carry out their responsibilities with integrity, compassion and fairness, regardless of the social or economic status of those they serve.
According to her, environmental health is a noble profession that requires passion, commitment and adherence to ethical standards. She noted that her love for the profession sustained her throughout her years of service and would continue to inspire her in retirement.
Mrs. Albert-Obateye began her career with the Lagos State Government as an Environmental Health Officer in 1991. Between 2000 and 2003, she served as a Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer with the World Health Organization (WHO).
She was recognised as the Most Active Staff of the Year in 2006 and played a key role during the 2014 Ebola outbreak as one of the WHO Ebola Team Managers at the Lagos International Airport, Ikeja.
Over the course of her career, she participated in several professional development programmes, including specialised training on climate change and waste management, further contributing to her expertise in environmental health and disease prevention.
