Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has presented compensation cheques worth over three billion naira to more than 300 Project Affected Persons (PAPs) whose lands were acquired by the state government for overriding public interest.

Governor Sanwo-Olu said the compensation exercise underscores his administration’s commitment to fairness, transparency and justice. He noted that while land acquisition for public purposes is backed by law, government has a moral and legal responsibility to adequately compensate affected property owners.

The governor explained that the acquired lands are being used for strategic projects designed to improve the quality of life of Lagos residents. He urged beneficiaries to make prudent use of the compensation and cautioned them against offering gratification to public officials involved in the process.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, described the exercise as a clear demonstration of the administration’s commitment to fairness and responsible governance.

Hamzat noted that although infrastructure development remains critical to the growth and development of Lagos State, government is mindful of the impact such projects have on affected communities and will continue to uphold transparency and due process in all land acquisition matters.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Lands Bureau, Kamar Olowoshago, disclosed that all compensation claims underwent rigorous verification processes, including enumeration, valuation and title confirmation, to ensure that only rightful beneficiaries received payment.

Olowoshago commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for sustaining a transparent compensation system and reaffirmed the bureau’s commitment to professionalism, fairness and accountability in the discharge of its responsibilities.

The compensation exercise is part of the Lagos State Government’s efforts to balance infrastructure development with the protection of citizens’ rights and interests.
