…Advocates Improved Oral Hygiene Practices Among Residents

The Dental Department of the General Hospital Somolu has marked the 2026 World Oral Health Day with a sensitisation campaign aimed at educating patients and residents on the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene.

Speaking at an event organised to commemorate the day, the Medical Director/Chief Executive Officer of the hospital, Mustapha Adebola Quadr, stressed that maintaining oral health from infancy through old age is vital to overall physical and mental well-being.

He explained that a healthy mouth supports essential daily functions such as eating, speaking, and social interaction, all of which contribute to improved confidence and quality of life.

The Director of the Dental Department, Mogbonjubola Otuseso, also addressed residents, urging them to take oral health seriously, noting that the mouth serves as the gateway to the body.

As part of the event, dental professionals demonstrated proper oral hygiene techniques, highlighting key practices such as brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste for at least two minutes, maintaining a healthy diet by limiting sugary and acidic foods, attending regular dental check-ups every six months, and avoiding harmful habits like tobacco use and excessive alcohol consumption.

The outreach programme further extended to major streets in Somolu, including Durosinmi, Bailey, and Akeju Oguntolu, where residents were sensitised on preventive oral healthcare.

World Oral Health Day, observed annually on March 20, serves as a global platform to raise awareness about the prevention and control of oral diseases. The 2026 celebration also marks the conclusion of the three-year “Happy Mouth” campaign, which began in 2024 and focused on promoting better oral health practices worldwide.
