Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced major investments in emergency management, including the addition of 11 new fire stations, the deployment of 62 modern firefighting vehicles and the recruitment of 150 new firefighters to strengthen fire safety and disaster response across the state.
The Governor disclosed this at the opening of the Lagos International Fire Safety Conference 3.0 held in Ikeja, where he revealed that emergency responders saved an estimated ₦118 billion worth of property and rescued more than 1,900 lives in 2025.
Represented by Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, Sanwo-Olu said the state has rebuilt the Fire and Rescue Service Headquarters, upgraded the Fire Academy and expanded its fire station network to 29 stations, with additional facilities under construction in Yaba, Ikotun and Oworonshoki.
He noted that the government has intensified enforcement of fire safety regulations through stricter inspections and implementation of the Fire Safety Levy, stressing that compliance should go beyond obtaining certificates to ensuring safety systems remain functional.
The Governor also highlighted the Fire Marshal Programme, which trains volunteers in homes, schools, markets, offices, worship centres and factories to identify fire risks, coordinate evacuations and support emergency responders.
Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to investing in personnel, equipment and technology to protect lives and property while encouraging residents, property developers and business owners to prioritise fire prevention measures.
Speaking at the conference, Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Olugbenga Oyerinde, said Lagos is increasingly focusing on preventive strategies, innovation and public education to reduce the occurrence of fire disasters.
Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, also commended the administration’s sustained investment in infrastructure, equipment and personnel development, describing the transformation of the service since 2019 as significant.
