The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit, popularly known as the Taskforce, has impounded 309 commercial motorcycles during a major enforcement operation along the ECOWAS Road corridor.
The exercise, carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources and supported by the Lagos State Police Command, also led to the removal of illegal kiosks, makeshift stalls, shanties, street traders and other environmental nuisances obstructing public spaces.
The operation covered several locations including Orile-Iganmu, Mile 2, Mazamaza, Festac First Gate, Iyana-Ira, Alakija, Iyana-Iba, Alaba Rago, Old Ojo Road and Okoko.
According to the agency, the exercise is part of ongoing efforts to enforce the ban on commercial motorcycles on restricted routes, strengthen security, improve traffic flow and promote environmental sanitation across the state.
The Taskforce said all impounded motorcycles would be processed for forfeiture to the Lagos State Government in line with the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.
Speaking after the operation, Chairman of the Agency, CSP Adetayo Akerele, described the level of lawlessness along the corridor as disturbing, noting that illegal ticketing, street trading and the activities of commercial motorcycle operators contribute to criminality, congestion and environmental degradation.
Akerele reaffirmed the agency's commitment to sustaining enforcement operations across Lagos, stressing that the Taskforce would continue to enforce extant laws to ensure a safer, cleaner and more orderly environment for residents.
