The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation has disclosed that the Lagos Rail Mass Transit Blue Line transported about 3.5 million passengers in 2025, while daily ridership on the rail corridor has increased to 15,000 passengers.
Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, made this known during the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing marking the third year of the second term of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu in Lagos.
According to the Ministry’s report, daily trips on the Blue Line increased from 57 trips to 72 trips and currently stand at 90 daily trips in 2025, reflecting growing public acceptance and usage of the rail system.
Osiyemi said the State Government has continued to strengthen operations on the Blue Line through the deployment of additional coaches and ongoing infrastructure expansion.
The report also revealed that construction works on Phase II of the Blue Line project are progressing, with ongoing track construction, station development, installation of power systems, and supporting rail infrastructure.
Major infrastructure works have reportedly been completed on key sections of the project, including the Mazamaza and LASU bridges, while station construction at Festac, LASU, and Volkswagen is advancing.
The Commissioner further disclosed that the State Government is expanding operations on the Lagos Rail Mass Transit Red Line to improve connectivity and reduce travel time across the state.
According to the report, the first phase of the 37-kilometre Red Line corridor currently operates from Agbado to Oyingbo using tracks shared with the Nigerian Railway Corporation.
The State Government also recently received a new set of 24-car trains to improve passenger capacity and reduce waiting time on the Red Line.
In addition, feasibility studies are ongoing for Phase II of the Red Line from Oyingbo to the National Theatre to provide a connection with the Blue Line corridor.
On the proposed Lagos Rail Mass Transit Green Line, the Ministry said the 68-kilometre rail corridor will connect Marina to Lekki Free Trade Zone through Victoria Island, Lekki, Ajah, and Sangotedo with about 17 stations.
The report stated that the Green Line is designed to transport about 35,000 passengers per hour, while a Memorandum of Understanding has already been signed with China Harbour Engineering Company for the project.
According to the Ministry, the Federal Executive Council has also approved funding for Phase I of the Green Line project.
Osiyemi noted that the ongoing rail projects align with the Sanwo-Olu administration’s THEMES+ Agenda aimed at developing an integrated, reliable, and sustainable multimodal transportation system across Lagos.
