The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, in collaboration with Iranti Press and A Whitespace Creative Arts Foundation, has launched the “Library on the Lagoon” initiative to address pollution and environmental abuse affecting the Lagos Lagoon.

The week-long project will run from April 26 to May 2, 2026, at Five Cowries Creek Terminal, Falomo, Ikoyi, with activities scheduled daily from noon to 6 p.m.

The initiative is aimed at promoting environmental awareness, encouraging community participation and fostering sustainable practices among Lagos residents.

Speaking on the project, General Manager of LASEPA, Dr Babatunde Ajayi, urged Lagosians to take part actively, noting that the programme is designed to protect the lagoon, enhance environmental safety and support the future of water transportation in the state.

He stressed the need for collective responsibility in safeguarding aquatic ecosystems for present and future generations.

Project Director, Maryam Kazeem, said the initiative targets water transport users, picnickers and riverine communities, raising awareness on the dangers of pollution caused by plastic waste, sewage and indiscriminate dumping.

She explained that the project combines environmental action with public engagement, encouraging residents to reflect on their role in preserving the lagoon.

A major feature of the initiative is an interactive installation that powers a trash collection system, allowing participants to contribute to clean-up efforts while sharing ideas on the lagoon’s future.

Also speaking, Director of Partnerships, Grants Management and Innovations at LASEPA, Mrs Shonibare Olabisi, said the collaboration reflects the agency’s commitment to innovative partnerships that promote environmental sustainability across Lagos.
