The Economic Community of West African States has taken a major step toward inclusive governance with the validation of a Regional Disability Data Accountability Framework designed to address gaps in reliable data on persons with disabilities across West Africa.
The framework, unveiled in Abuja, is anchored on the ECOWAS Disability Action Plan (2020–2030) and aligns with continental and global commitments to promote inclusive development.
According to the Commission, the initiative is aimed at strengthening national data systems, improving comparability among member states, and supporting evidence-based policymaking to ensure persons with disabilities are not excluded from development processes.
The validation exercise brought together representatives of ECOWAS member states, regional institutions, and development partners, reflecting a shared commitment to enhancing accountability, transparency, and inclusion in disability-related policies.
Stakeholders at the meeting reaffirmed the importance of accurate and harmonised data in driving effective planning and ensuring that disability inclusion remains a priority across the region.
