The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has introduced an online religious premarital counselling course aimed at strengthening families and preventing domestic violence across Lagos.

The initiative was announced during a press briefing by the agency’s Executive Secretary, Titilayo Vivour-Adeniyi, who stressed the importance of proper preparation before marriage. According to her, many couples begin married life without the necessary skills for effective communication, conflict resolution, and emotional responsibility—factors that are essential for building healthy relationships.

Vivour-Adeniyi revealed that over 60 percent of survivors of domestic violence had noticed signs of abusive behaviour before marriage but still went ahead with the union. She explained that social pressure, cultural expectations, and a lack of proper guidance often contribute to such decisions.

She also highlighted the critical role religious institutions play in marriage preparation in Lagos. With about 80 percent of marriages conducted through churches, mosques, and other faith-based organisations, religious leaders—including pastors, imams, and faith counsellors—serve as key partners in promoting healthy relationships and preventing domestic violence.

Representatives of religious institutions welcomed the initiative and commended the agency for the effort. Speaking at the event, Henry Adelegan of the Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina, alongside counselling psychologist and NASFAT missionary Adekunle Saheed, noted that the programme would equip religious leaders with the necessary knowledge and tools to better prepare couples for married life.

In her goodwill message, Adegbola Olusola, Deputy Director at the Lagos State Ministry of Home Affairs, praised the initiative and emphasized the importance of collaboration between government and faith-based institutions in promoting stable and healthy families.
